A lot of Braxton's early albums are unavailable so any reissue like this is worth tracking down. Two original albums on one CD. An odd pairing but good value, making for interesting & contrasting listening. The first album "Silence" consists of a couple of 17 minute tracks by the Braxton Trio (Braxton-reeds; Leo Smith-trumpet; Leroy Jenkins-violin) recorded in Paris 18 July 1969. If you know Braxton's Delmark debut or, obviously, the two Byg albums from Paris 69 you'll know what to expect: short haunting folksy ensemble themes plus lengthy meandering free improvisation, playful but with an underlying seriousness (compositions credited to Jenkins & Smith incidentally). The second album "Time Zones" features the duo of Braxton & avant garde synthesizer player Richard Teitelbaum of MEV fame. Two long tracks (one studio, one live) recorded in USA 1976. Lots of characteristic fluid sax soloing from Braxton with a backdrop of electronica drones, but also some wigged-out contrasts such as extended passages of moog squiggles set off against the DEEP bass rumble of Braxton's contrebasse clarinet. Overall this reissue may be marginal to Braxton's oeuvre, but it's worth getting if you are a long time fan.
